The oil runs through the engine picking up any dirt, carbon deposits and other impurities that may be in there, it then runs through the oil filter leaving all the pollutants in the oil pan. If the waste is not cleaned out of the pan damage can be done and the pan may need to be removed and thoroughly cleaned.
